Evangelina
Feminine · Greek roots · “bringing good news”
Evangelina rests on the Greek euangelos, "bringing good news" — the same word that gave English both evangelist and, further back, angel. It has been on the US charts since the early twentieth century without ever crowding a classroom, and it is strongest in California, Texas and Florida, where the Spanish form has long been at home. Five syllables that end on a soft -lina, so it arrives unhurried.

The story of Evangelina
The Greek euangelion, "good news," and euangelos, "bringer of good news," passed into Latin with early Christianity and produced a family of names across Europe: Evangelia in Greek, Evangelista in Italy, Evangelina in Spanish and Portuguese. The English-facing branch got a large push from Longfellow's 1847 narrative poem Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie, about an Acadian woman searching for her lost betrothed after the deportations from Nova Scotia — the poem was read aloud in nineteenth-century parlors and schoolrooms for decades. Evangelina reached American records mainly through Spanish-speaking families, and its concentration today in California, Texas and Florida still shows that route.

The Leonore test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Evangelina's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Leonore climbed just as high around 1906, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Leonore's path sketches the road Evangelina is walking now.
Evangelina is on its second act. Revived names age gently: the generation that wore them first is far enough away that the name feels classic rather than dated.

The trade-off
- A settled, plainly documented meaning — "bringing good news" — with no competing readings to explain.
- Works in English, Spanish and Portuguese with the same spelling, only the pronunciation shifting.
- Deep bench of short forms already in real use: Eva, Evie, Lina, Vangie.
- On US records for more than a century, so it reads as an old name rather than a new invention.
- Familiar enough to be recognized on sight, uncommon enough that a child is unlikely to share it.
- Evangeline is the better-known spelling in English-speaking America, so expect a lifetime of gentle correction on the last syllable — LEE-nuh, not LYNE.
- Five syllables and eleven letters. It will be shortened by classmates and forms will feel cramped, which is part of why the nicknames are so well established.
- In American English the opening syllables call up "evangelical" for some listeners. Nothing about the name's history requires that reading, but it is worth knowing before you commit.
- The Eva/Evie short forms are common among young children right now, so the everyday name may end up sounding less distinctive than the full one.
