Nori
Feminine · “In Japanese”
Nori is given to both — 3,028 girls and 244 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Nori arrives in English by more than one road: as a Japanese name element written with characters for order and chronicle, and as the natural clipping of Nora, Noreen and Eleanor. Two beats, no silent letters, nothing anyone has to spell twice. The same four letters also sit in the Old Norse dwarf-catalog that Tolkien mined for The Hobbit.

The story of Nori
In Japan, nori has been a standard building block of given names for a very long time, most familiarly at the front of Noriko, a name borne by generations of Japanese women through the twentieth century; clipped on its own, it works for men and women alike there. The Old Norse Nóri belongs to the Dvergatal, the list of dwarf-names inside the poem Völuspá, which J.R.R. Tolkien raided for the company of dwarves in The Hobbit in 1937 — that Nori is a male character and a separate line entirely. In American records the name has been logged quietly for decades as a girl's name, with the noticeable rise coming only lately, alongside a broad fondness for short names ending in -i. Most English-speaking families reach it either from Japanese heritage or by shortening Nora.

In Japanese, depending on the characters used: 'order, rule' or 'chronicle'
Japanese names live in their kanji, not their sound. Nori is written 典 (rule, ceremony), 紀 (chronicle, order) or 徳 (virtue), among others, so romanised Nori carries all of these at once and none of them exclusively. Used in English as a short form of Nora, Noreen or Eleanor, it borrows whatever those names mean — and Eleanor's own origin has never been settled. Separately, nori (海苔) is the everyday Japanese word for edible seaweed: same sound, unrelated word.
Pronouncing Nori
NOR-ee
In English the stress sits on the first syllable. Japanese speakers give the two syllables even weight, with a light tapped r — closer to NO-ree — and either version is understood.

The Jesenia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Nori's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jesenia climbed just as high around 1987, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jesenia's path sketches the road Nori is walking now.
Nori sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Four letters, two syllables, spelled the way it sounds — most people write it correctly on the first try.
- Works as a full given name and as the short form of Noriko, Nora, Noreen or Eleanor, so a longer formal name can be added later or not at all.
- Reads naturally in both Japanese and English, which is useful in families that live in both.
- Easy for a small child to say and to write early.
- Nori is also the ordinary word for the seaweed sheets used in sushi, stocked in most American supermarkets. Plenty of people will make that connection first, usually cheerfully, and it does not go away.
- It sits very close to Nora, Norah and Noor. Expect to correct the occasional mishearing and to repeat it on the phone.
- Outside Japanese-speaking families, the meaning has to be explained rather than assumed — the sense lives in characters that romanised Nori does not show.
- She is unlikely to meet another one at school, which cuts both ways: no surname initial needed, but a fair amount of saying it twice.
