Angelin
Feminine · “messenger”
Before there were angels, angelos meant a messenger — an ordinary man on a road with news. The Greek translators of the Hebrew Bible chose it to render a Hebrew word that also just meant messenger, and it was that choice, rather than anything in the word itself, that gave English its winged version.

The story of Angelin
Greek angelos is a plain word for someone carrying a message. When Jewish scholars in Alexandria translated the Hebrew scriptures into Greek, they used it for malakh, which likewise means messenger, and the messengers in question happened to be God's. Latin took the Greek word rather than translating it, Christianity carried it across Europe, and within a few centuries it had wings and no longer meant a man with news. The name family followed: Angelus, Angela, Angelina, Angelica, Angeline. Angelin is Angeline with the final e worn off, which happens constantly in American records and is why so many names appear in the files one letter shorter than their bearers write them.
Meaning
messenger
Through Latin angelus from Greek angelos, a messenger. Angelin is a shortened Angeline, the French feminine of Angelin, itself a diminutive of the Latin. The religious sense of the word is a translation decision rather than an original meaning.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names.
