Where it comes from

The story of Andreya

Andreas was the first disciple called in John's Gospel, which is why the Greek church calls him the First-Called, and his name spread with Christianity into every European language. What happened next is a straightforward accident of grammar. Latin and Greek names ending in -as could be masculine, and Italian kept Andrea as a man's name on that basis, while French, German and English treated the -a ending as feminine and built a woman's name out of it. Both are correct in their own language, which produces regular confusion on international paperwork. The y in this spelling forces three clear syllables where the ea of Andrea can collapse into two.

Meaning

manly, of a man

From Greek Andreas, built on aner, andros, a man. The same root gives android, androgynous, polyandry and philander. Andrea is the feminine in most of Europe and the masculine in Italy, where it is one of the commonest men's names; Andreya is an American respelling of the feminine.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Andreya went to 7 girls in 2025, but Andreia is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 12, which makes it the 948th most-given girls’ name of the year — 10,984 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 133,939 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 229,610 for Andreya itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Greek meaning with a shelf of English words to point at.
  • Three short forms of quite different registers, one of which serves either child.
  • The spelling forces the syllable count the family intends.
What to consider
  • Andrea is far commoner and this spelling will be corrected toward it.
  • In Italy the name is a man's, which matters on any international form.
  • The meaning is manly, which is either a good story or an awkward one depending on the family.
