Where it comes from

The story of Andrews

Wales kept a patronymic system long after England had abandoned it — a man was Dafydd ap Rhys, David son of Rhys, and the name changed every generation. English administration required fixed surnames, and Welsh families converted by freezing the father's name and marking it with the English possessive, which is why a handful of surnames cover an enormous share of Welsh families. Andrew himself is the first-called of the apostles and one of the most widely adopted patron saints in Europe — Scotland, Russia, Greece, Romania and Ukraine all claim him — and the diagonal cross on the Scottish flag is said to be the shape he was crucified on.

Meaning

of Andrew

A patronymic surname from Andrew, Greek Andreas, built on aner, andros, a man. The final s is a genitive: son of Andrew, with the son unstated. The same pattern produced Williams, Jones from John, Roberts, Edwards, Richards and Evans.

Andrews sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1985, with 19 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Greek meaning and a fully documented surname pattern behind it.
  • Drew and Andy both work as short forms and both serve either child.
  • Andrew is available as a formal version with a two-thousand-year record.
What to consider
  • It is a surname and reads as one, which some people like and some do not.
  • Andrew is far commoner and the s will be dropped constantly.
  • The meaning of the root is manly, which is either a good story or an awkward one.
