The story of Andrea
Andrew was the first apostle called and is the patron of Scotland, Russia and Greece. Italian took the name as Andrea, keeping it masculine — Andrea del Sarto, Andrea Palladio, Andrea Bocelli — and the -a ending simply reflects how Italian handles Greek names in -as. English-speaking countries meanwhile formed a feminine Andrea from the Latin, and it became a very large American girls' name in the 1960s and 1970s. The masculine American record, peaking in 1976, belongs to Italian-American and Latin American families using the Italian name, and it is regularly mistaken for the girls' one.
Meaning
Manly, of a man
From Greek andreios, manly, from anēr, andros, a man. The reading is settled — which makes the English feminine use of the name a genuine curiosity. Italian Andrea is masculine and descends directly from Greek Andreas; the English and German feminine Andrea is a separate Latinate formation on the same root.
