The story of Amity
Amicitia was one of the words Roman political vocabulary used most — a treaty of friendship was a formal instrument — and English took amity in the fifteenth century with that public sense attached. Treaties of amity and commerce are a standard eighteenth-century form. Puritan naming took it as a virtue name, and it appears in American records in real numbers around 1900 and again in the 1970s.
Meaning
friendship, friendly relations
From Latin amicitia, friendship, on amicus, a friend, from amare, to love; English uses amity chiefly of relations between states or groups, which is a narrower sense than the Latin had.

The Johnetta test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Amity's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Johnetta climbed just as high around 1942, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Johnetta's path sketches the road Amity is walking now.
Amity sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
