The story of Amaziah
Amaziah ruled Judah in the eighth century BC and the biblical account gives him a mixed report — a competent start and a bad end. Several other men of the name appear in Chronicles. English Protestants took up the whole class of -iah names after the Reformation, and Amaziah appears in colonial American records alongside Hezekiah and Jedidiah. Its recent return belongs to a broader revival of long Old Testament names.

The Omid test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Amaziah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Omid climbed just as high around 1987, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Omid's path sketches the road Amaziah is walking now.
Amaziah sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

Where Amaziah is headed
Amaziah should hold steady through 2030 — the curve is flat, and flat curves are the most predictable kind. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- A settled meaning that forms a complete sentence, which few names manage.
- Ziah is a ready short form that sounds entirely current.
- Documented in the biblical text and in colonial American records alike.
- Seven letters and four syllables is long for early handwriting and for forms.
- The biblical king it belongs to is not remembered warmly by the text.
- It is close enough to Amazing that the joke will be made at school.
