The story of Amauri
Amalric was a Visigothic king of Spain in the sixth century and the name of two crusader kings of Jerusalem. French Amaury has been in continuous use since the medieval period. The Italian form gave the world rather more: Amerigo Vespucci, a Florentine navigator who wrote widely read accounts of the South American coast, was honored by the German cartographer Martin Waldseemuller in 1507 with a map that labeled the new continent America, a Latinized feminine of his given name. American use of Amauri follows French and Italian communities and, more recently, Latin American ones; it is used on both sexes.
Meaning
work-ruler; ruler of the household
Germanic amal, 'work, labor, exertion' — also the name of the Amali, the Ostrogothic royal dynasty — and ric, 'ruler, power'. The compound Amalric is documented among the Visigoths and Franks from the sixth century. French produced Amaury and Italian Amerigo. The same amal element gives Amelia and Amalia. The derivation is settled at every step.

The Jonica test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Amauri's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jonica climbed just as high around 1982, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jonica's path sketches the road Amauri is walking now.
Amauri sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
