The story of Amadeus
Mozart was baptized Joannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus; Theophilus became Gottlieb in German and Amadè or Amadeus in the Latin and Italian he used professionally. He signed himself Amadeus rarely and usually in jest. Peter Shaffer's 1979 play and the 1984 film made the form famous, and the name is in current American use.
Meaning
loves God
From the Latin amare, 'to love', and Deus, 'God' — a verb and a noun rather than two nouns, which makes it a sentence. It translates the Greek Theophilos and the German Gottlieb exactly. The Latin is ordinary and the meaning undisputed.

The Eriberto test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Amadeus's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Eriberto climbed just as high around 1983, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Eriberto's path sketches the road Amadeus is walking now.
Amadeus sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
