Alys is Alice as the Middle Ages and Wales both spelled it, and Alice is a Germanic name worn down almost to nothing: Adalheidis, noble kind, became Adaliz in Old French and then Aliz and then Alice, losing a syllable at every step. This spelling is the one that stopped before the final e.

Where it comes from

The story of Alys

Adalheidis was a name for Frankish and German noblewomen, and it produced two lines: the full form, which became Adelaide, and the shortened one, which became Alice. Alice was among the most common women's names in medieval England, and Alys is how it was often written before spelling settled. Wales kept that spelling and still uses it. In American records the form appears in the nineteenth century, when medieval spellings were fashionable, and again now with the wider revival of Alice.

Meaning

noble kind; of noble sort

Germanic adal, noble, joined to heid, kind or sort, giving Adalheidis. Old French reduced it to Adaliz and Aliz, and English took that as Alice. The Welsh Alys is the same name with Welsh spelling conventions.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a genuine historical spelling rather than a modern respelling, which is unusual.
  • It has a real home in Welsh, where it is the standard form.
  • It carries a documented Germanic name with one of the most productive histories in Europe.
What to consider
  • Alice is the standard English spelling and will be written instead by nearly everyone.
  • The y looks modern to American readers, though the spelling is medieval.
  • Alice is currently well used, so the sound will not be distinctive.
