Where it comes from

The story of Alphonzo

The tenth king of the name did something no monarch of his era was expected to do: he stopped writing in Latin. His court produced law codes, chronicles, astronomical tables and a vast collection of songs to the Virgin, and the working language was Castilian — the everyday speech of the kingdom rather than the language of learning. He is also supposed to have said, on being shown the complexity of the Ptolemaic model of the heavens, that had he been present at the creation he would have offered some useful advice. He commissioned new astronomical tables that were used across Europe for three centuries.

noble and ready

A Visigothic name, and the elements are argued over: the second half is generally taken as ready or eager, the first as noble, but competing reconstructions exist. What is certain is that the name is Germanic and reached Spanish through the Visigothic kingdoms.

Fashion outlook

Alphonzo sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The rhythm is confident and the name carries well at its length.
  • It has established short forms in two languages.
  • It reaches back to one of the oldest royal names in Iberia.
What to consider
  • Alfonso is standard in every language that owns the name and this gets corrected.
  • Neither borrowed letter belongs to the name's own history.
  • It is long, and most people will shorten it immediately.
