Where it comes from

The story of Alphonza

The name came into Spanish from the Visigoths and was written Alphonsus in medieval Latin, which is where the ph comes from; French made it Alphonse and English Alphonso. The French form gave America a catchphrase. Frederick Opper's newspaper comic strip Alphonse and Gaston, about two Frenchmen too polite ever to go through a door first, ran at the start of the twentieth century, and 'After you, my dear Alphonse' became the standard American line for excessive courtesy. Alphonza is the family's American end: the z sound the name was always spoken with, written down, and a final a.

Meaningscholars disagree

noble and ready, through Alfonso

Alphonza is a spelling of Alphonso, and nothing separate is recorded for it. The root, Spanish Alfonso, is usually taken from a Visigothic name joining words for 'noble' and 'ready'; other scholars put a word for 'battle' in the first half instead. Either way the meaning belongs to the root, and Alphonza inherits it unchanged.

Fashion outlook

Alphonza sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Belongs to a family with forms in Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian and German, so it is recognized well beyond English.
  • Al is a ready short form that everyone already knows.
  • The spelling shows the z sound plainly, so it is read aloud the way it is said.
What to consider
  • Most people expect Alphonso and will write the o ending; Alphonza will need spelling out on forms.
  • The final a reads to many English speakers as a girl's ending, although the record holds this spelling for boys. It is a small thing to correct once and then it is done.
