Where it comes from

The story of Alizabeth

Elisheba was Aaron's wife and Elizabeth the mother of John the Baptist, and the name has been continuously used across Christendom since. England's two queens Elizabeth fixed it as a royal name, and it has never left the American top twenty-five since records began — an unbroken run no other girls' name matches. Names that stable generate few variants, but the ones they do generate tend to be phonetic: Elisabeth, Elizabet, Alizabeth, Elizebeth. Alizabeth appears in the American records in the 1990s and peaks in 2007, and it belongs to that small variant stream rather than to any separate tradition.

Meaning

My God is an oath

From Hebrew ʾĔlîšebaʿ, from ʾēl, God, and a second element read either as šebaʿ, oath, or as sābaʿ, abundance. The oath reading is the usual one. The opening ʾēl is the divine element and is carried by the E of the standard spelling; the A of Alizabeth is an American respelling of an unstressed vowel and has no meaning.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The A spelling makes Ali available as a short form.
  • It sounds exactly like one of the most established names in the world.
  • Liz and Beth are both instantly usable.
What to consider
  • Elizabeth is the standard spelling and will be written for it, always.
  • The A replaces the Hebrew word for God, which a curious child will find.
  • Elizabeth is so dominant that any variant reads as a misspelling.
