The story of Alicen
Very few names have generated as much ordinary English vocabulary as this one. An Alice band is a headband, named for the way Tenniel drew the girl in the book. Alice blue is a pale grey-blue, named for a president's daughter who wore it in the 1900s and popular enough to get a song of its own. The Wonderland books themselves are among the most translated works in the world, so the name traveled to places where the German root behind it means nothing at all. The -cen ending is much later and much smaller: American parents write the final syllable of a familiar name a new way, and Alicen, Alysen and Allisen come out of the same impulse.
Meaning
noble
Alice runs back through Old French Aalis to Adelais, a shortening of the Germanic Adalheidis, built on adal, noble. The -cen ending on this spelling is American and has no source; it writes the same unstressed final syllable that Alison and Alyson write with an s.

The Shelena test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Alicen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Shelena climbed just as high around 1976, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Shelena's path sketches the road Alicen is walking now.
Alicen sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled Germanic meaning at the far end of a fully documented chain.
- Alice is available as a shorter and much older formal version.
- Three syllables with a firm opening stress that suits most surnames.
- Allison and Alison are both far commoner, so this spelling will be corrected constantly.
- The c does the work of an s, which every reader has to work out for themselves.
- It will be assumed to be a misspelling rather than a choice.
