Where it comes from

The story of Alexei

Alexios was a Byzantine name borne by emperors and by a fifth-century saint whose story spread across the Christian world. Slavic languages took it with Orthodoxy, and Aleksei became one of the standard Russian men's names — carried by a tsar of the seventeenth century and by the last tsarevich. English-language records transliterate it in several ways: Alexei, Alexey, Aleksei and Alyosha, the last being the affectionate form rather than the name itself.

Meaning

defender

From Greek Alexios, built on a verb meaning to ward off or defend; the same element opens Alexander, where it is joined to a word for a man.

Alexei sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2000, with 48 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Alexei went to 36 boys in 2025, but Aleksey, Aleksei and Alexey are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 70, which makes it the 858th most-given boys’ name of the year — 2,382 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 24,401 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 47,447 for Alexei itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Greek meaning and a documented record reaching back to Byzantium.
  • Alex is available immediately as a completely ordinary English short form.
  • Widely recognized across Russia, Greece, Italy and eastern Europe.
What to consider
  • The stress falls at the end in Russian and in the middle in English, so two versions will follow him.
  • Alexei, Alexey and Aleksei are the same name, and relatives may prefer different spellings.
  • The Russian associations are strong and, for some Americans, political.
