Where it comes from

The story of Alexandrea

The foundations began in 331 BC with Alexandria in Egypt and continued east: Alexandria Eschate, the furthest Alexandria, on the Syr Darya in modern Tajikistan; Alexandria in Aria, now Herat; Alexandria Arachosia, generally identified with Kandahar; Alexandria Bucephalous, named for his horse. Most were garrison settlements over existing towns, and most lost the name within a few centuries. The Egyptian one held it and became the intellectual capital of the Greek world. The name's transmission east through Persian as Iskandar carried it into Arabic, Urdu and Malay, where it remains an ordinary personal name. Alexandrea peaks in America in 1995.

Meaning

Greek "defender of men"

From alexein, to defend, plus anēr, andros, a man. Alexandra is the standard feminine, and Alexandrea is an American respelling with the final two letters transposed; it carries no separate meaning. Iskandar is the Persian and Arabic form, produced by hearing the initial Al- as the Arabic definite article and dropping it — which is why Kandahar, on the usual derivation, no longer looks like Alexander.
