Alexander reached the Indus, and the name went with him — it survives as Iskandar in Arabic and Persian, Sikandar in Urdu, and it is still given in Afghanistan and Pakistan two and a half thousand years later. The Balkans took it through Byzantium and it became one of the standard men's names of Serbia and Bulgaria. Few personal names have that geographic range.
