From Adela to Aleen
The story of Aleen
Adeline was a Norman French diminutive of the Germanic Adela, and medieval England clipped it to Aline. That short form stayed in use quietly for centuries before the -een respellings of the late nineteenth century — Arleen, Doreen, Maureen, Aleen — made the sound fashionable again in America. The result is a name that looks like a modern invention and is in fact the oldest part of a very old name.

noble
Through Aline and Adeline the name carries the Germanic adal, noble, which also stands behind Adelaide and Alice. A second line reads Aleen as a variant of Eileen, the Irish anglicization of Eibhlin, whose own origin is disputed.

The trade-off
- Behind a simple spelling is a documented chain reaching back to medieval Normandy.
- Five letters and two syllables — very easy to write and impossible to mispronounce.
- It has genuine early twentieth-century American history rather than being a new coinage.
- Aline, Alene, Arleen and Eileen are all close, and mail will arrive addressed to each.
- The stress on the second syllable can be missed by readers who expect AL-een.
- It reads as a name of a particular era to older Americans.
