The story of Aleczander
Arabic marks the definite article with al- prefixed to the noun, and speakers borrowing foreign words routinely strip it when they think they hear one. Alexandros arrived as al-Iskandar, and what remained after the article was removed was Iskandar, which spread as a personal name from Turkey through Iran to Pakistan and Indonesia; Sikandar is the same name again. The same process gave Arabic and then Spanish a set of words where an article got attached or detached, which is how English ended up with alcohol, algebra and alchemy carrying an Arabic article nobody notices. The x in the Greek name is itself a single letter for two sounds, and American respellings attack it constantly, replacing it with ks, cs and, here, the Polish digraph cz.
