Where it comes from

The story of Aldrich

American parents have always taken surnames from public life, and financiers and senators appear in the records alongside generals. Nelson Aldrich of Rhode Island entered the Senate in 1881, chaired the finance committee, and was described by his critics as the general manager of the United States; the tariff of 1909 carried his name, and so did the currency plan he drafted after the panic of 1907, which was reworked into the Federal Reserve Act of 1913. Whether the families using the name in those years were honoring him or simply liking the sound is not recoverable, and the second is more likely for most of them. The surname itself is much older, from an Old English personal name built on the words for old and for power.
