This spelling is a Greek word by accident. Aedon is the nightingale — the bird, and a queen of Thebes in the Odyssey who was turned into one after killing her own son by mistake, and who sings about it every spring. The Irish name it respells has nothing to do with any of that.

Where it comes from

The story of Aidon

The Odyssey tells Aedon's story in a few lines, as a comparison rather than a tale: Penelope says she is as restless as the daughter of Pandareus, who mourns her child in the form of a nightingale. Later writers filled it in. The Greek word for the bird is the same word, and the nightingale in Greek poetry is always a mourner because of it. The Irish name arrived by a completely different road, from a fire god's name with a diminutive, and reached English as Aidan and Aiden. Aidon is one of the further respellings, and it happens to land on a word that was already taken.

little fire

As a respelling of Aidan, the source is Irish aodh, fire, with a diminutive ending. As a Greek word, aedon is a nightingale and the name of a mythological figure. The two are unconnected; this spelling sits on both and the family decides which it means.

Aidon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2006, with 47 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Aidon went to 5 boys in 2025, but Aydon is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 10, which makes it the 918th most-given boys’ name of the year — 11,090 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 170,808 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 341,615 for Aidon itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables that everyone reads correctly on sight.
  • The Irish name behind it has a documented seventh-century bearer and a fixed feast day.
  • It sits inside a completely familiar sound family.
What to consider
  • Aidan and Aiden are both far commoner and at least five spellings compete.
  • The o changes nothing audible, so the whole cost of the spelling is paid for appearance.
  • It belongs to a narrow band of years and dates the bearer to them.
