The name is Arabic, built from the root ḥ-m-d, which gives Arabic its everyday words for praise and thanks as well as the names Muhammad, Mahmud and Hamid. It appears in the Qur'an in Surat as-Saff, where a messenger named Ahmad is foretold, and Islamic tradition reads that as a name of the Prophet — which is why the name spread as fast and as far as the faith did. It traveled into Turkish as Ahmet and was borne by Ottoman sultans, including Ahmed I and Ahmed III; into Persian, Urdu and Malay largely unchanged; and into West Africa as Ahmadu and Amadou. In the United States it arrived with several distinct communities at once — Arab, South Asian, African and African American — and has held a steady place ever since.
