Benicio
Masculine · “A Florentine family name”
Benicio began as a Florentine family name and reached Spanish through a saint, then reached American ears through film. It has the open, unhurried rhythm of the Spanish names it sits beside — four syllables that land softly on the middle one — while keeping a first syllable English speakers already know from Ben.

The story of Benicio
Filippo Benizi was a thirteenth-century Florentine who joined the Servite order and became its prior general; when he was canonized in the seventeenth century, Spanish-speaking Catholics knew him as San Felipe Benicio. His surname traveled the way saints' names often do — off the family and onto the font — and Benicio became a given name in Spain and across Latin America. In the United States it arrived later, and it arrived with a face attached: the Puerto Rican actor Benicio del Toro carried it into American film and, with it, onto the charts. The name's strongest footing here is in California, Texas and Florida, which is the map of Spanish-language naming in the country.
Meaningscholars disagree
A Florentine family name, usually traced to Latin roots meaning 'kind' or 'blessed'
The path is clear: Benicio is the Spanish rendering of the Italian surname Benizi. What the surname itself meant is the unsettled part. Two Latin candidates compete — benignus, 'kind, benevolent', and benedictus, 'blessed' — and neither has won. Many Spanish-language name books simply give 'benevolent' and leave it there.

Pronouncing Benicio
beh-NEE-see-oh
Latin American Spanish and general American English agree on this. In most of Spain the c becomes a soft 'th', giving beh-NEE-thee-oh. English speakers occasionally flatten the middle to buh-NISS-ee-oh, which is worth correcting early.

The Bernardo test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Benicio's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Bernardo climbed just as high around 1994, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Bernardo's path sketches the road Benicio is walking now.
Benicio sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Spelled the way it sounds in both Spanish and English, with no silent letters and no competing spellings to defend.
- Comes with short forms already in wide use — Ben, Benny, Beni — so there is a plain everyday version ready-made.
- Documented back to a thirteenth-century Florentine and carried by Spanish speakers for centuries; not a recent coinage.
- Works without adjustment in Spanish, Portuguese and English-speaking settings.
- For many adults the name points straight to one well-known actor. That association is warm rather than awkward, but it will be the first thing some people say.
- The c is a soft 'th' in most of Spain and an 's' elsewhere, so the name will be said two slightly different ways depending on who is saying it.
- Four syllables is a lot for a playground, and Ben and Benny are far more familiar names. Expect him to be shortened often, whether or not that was the plan.
- People who hear it before they see it sometimes write Benecio or Venicio. A quick spelling out loud usually settles it.
