Erin, Aaron and Aerin are three names, one sound and no way to tell them apart in speech. Most Americans pronounce all three identically, which means the spelling is carrying the entire distinction. Aerin was invented to be a fourth option, visibly different from the two that already existed.

Our story of Aerin
Our reading is that Aerin exists because English gave three unrelated names the same pronunciation and left the spelling to sort them out. Erin comes from Irish and names a country. Aaron is Hebrew, or more likely Egyptian, and belongs to the first high priest. In most American accents the vowel before r has merged so completely that the two are indistinguishable, which is why a woman named Erin and a man named Aaron answer to the same sound. Adding a third spelling does not resolve the ambiguity in speech, since Aerin sounds like both, but it does resolve it on paper, and paper is where names mostly live: forms, rolls, records, screens. That is the practical logic of a great deal of respelling, and it is why so many respellings are inaudible. They are not trying to change the sound.

Irish Eirinn, the dative case of Eire, Ireland
Erin is the anglicized form of Eirinn, the dative case of Eire, the Irish name for Ireland, so the name is a grammatical form of a country's name rather than a word in its own right. Aerin is a modern respelling with an added a, and may also be read as a feminine of Aaron, whose own meaning is unknown and probably Egyptian. It peaks in 2008.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
