The story of Aerial
Ariel appears in Isaiah as a name for Jerusalem, in later Jewish mystical writing as an angel, and in The Tempest as a spirit of the air, which is where the confusion with the English word starts — Shakespeare's Ariel is airy, and readers connected the name to the adjective from then on. It is a man's name in Hebrew and remains one in Israel. In America it went the other way after 1989, when an animated mermaid carried it, and the respellings followed within a couple of years. Aerial is the one that took the English word rather than the Hebrew name, which means it is spelled correctly for a meaning it was probably not chosen for.

lion of God
If the name is Ariel respelled, the Hebrew is ari, a lion, with el, God, and Isaiah uses it as a name for Jerusalem. If the spelling is meant as the English word aerial, the source is Greek aer, air, and the meaning is of the air. Families use both readings, and the spelling supports the second while the name is almost always the first.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aerial's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Zakia climbed just as high around 1975, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Zakia's path sketches the road Aerial is walking now.

The trade-off
- The name behind it has a documented Hebrew meaning that is concrete and vivid.
- Ari works at once as a short form and serves either child.
- Every sound in it is ordinary English, so nothing needs teaching.
- Ariel is the standard spelling by a very wide margin, and this one will be corrected for life.
- As spelled, it is an English adjective about the air rather than a name.
- In Hebrew it is a man's name, so the few boys carrying this spelling are closer to the original than the girls.
