The story of Adriel
The Bible contains several thousand personal names, and only a few dozen have ever been in general use in English. The Reformation opened the Old Testament stock, and Puritan naming took a broad sweep of it, but even then most of the roll went untouched. Modern American naming has been working through the remainder from the 1990s onward, taking names that are short, end in the divine -el or -iah, and carry no strong association: Adriel, Amariah, Elior, Zaviel, Ezriel. Adriel is used for both sexes in America, and the female figures peak in 2017, later than the male ones.

Hebrew "flock of God"
Generally read as ʿeder, a flock or herd, plus El, God, giving flock of God. An alternative takes the first element from a root meaning to help. The name appears in the first and second books of Samuel for Adriel the Meholathite, who marries Saul's daughter Merab. The -el ending is the ordinary Hebrew divine element, the same one closing Michael, Gabriel and Daniel.

The Marshall test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Adriel's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marshall climbed just as high around 1950, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marshall's path sketches the road Adriel is walking now.
Adriel sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
