Adon
Masculine · “lord”
Adon is lord in Hebrew, the ordinary word: adon is a master or an owner, and the plural form Adonai is what Jewish tradition says aloud in place of the divine name. Greek borrowed the same Semitic root for Adonis, the beautiful youth of the myth, which is a different road to the same word.

The story of Adon
The word is ordinary Hebrew and became a name in modern Israel along with a great many other plain words. Its more famous descendant went west: Phoenician worshippers addressed a dying-and-rising god as Adon, my lord, and Greek speakers took the address for the name, which produced Adonis. Modern American use of Adon draws on the Hebrew, on Adonis, and on the Spanish Adonai, and the four letters do not distinguish them.
Meaning
lord; master
Hebrew adon, a lord or master, used of people as well as of God. The Greek Adonis comes from the same Semitic root, borrowed through Phoenician, where the god was addressed as my lord.

The Domnick test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Adon's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Domnick climbed just as high around 1917, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Domnick's path sketches the road Adon is walking now.
Adon sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is one plain word and is documented across three languages.
- Four letters and two syllables: quick to write and easy to say.
- Don works as a short form and is instantly familiar.
- Adon, Adan and Aden are close enough to be confused by people writing quickly.
- Its three possible sources are related but distinct, so the meaning needs explaining.
- Two stress patterns circulate and the spelling settles neither.
