The story of Adithya
The Rigveda names Aditi as the mother of a group of gods called the Adityas, and over time the group narrowed and the name attached to Surya, the sun. Naming a son Aditya is therefore naming him for the sun by way of the sun's mother, which is a characteristically Sanskrit way of arriving at a meaning. The Adithya spelling with a th belongs to Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada transliteration, where the letter is a dental consonant with a following breath; English readers reliably turn it into the th of thin, which is a sound Sanskrit does not have. Adithya's best year in United States records is 2002.
Meaning
son of Aditi, and thence the sun
Sanskrit Aditya is a patronymic-type formation from Aditi, the mother of the gods, whose name is a plus diti, unbound or unlimited. The Adityas are her sons, a class of solar deities, and in later usage the word means the sun itself. The th in this spelling is a South Indian transliteration convention marking an aspirated dental, not an English th sound.

The Derward test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Adithya's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Derward climbed just as high around 1921, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Derward's path sketches the road Adithya is walking now.
Adithya sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
