Where it comes from

The story of Adelbert

Adalbert of Prague was a tenth-century bishop and missionary, martyred among the Prussians and one of the patron saints of Poland and Bohemia. The name was standard in German and Central European use, and German emigration brought Adelbert to America, where it appears in nineteenth-century records and peaked around 1885.

Meaning

noble and bright

From the Germanic adal, 'noble', and beraht, 'bright' or 'famous'. Albert is the contracted form; Adelbert keeps the full first element. Both elements are ordinary words and the compound is transparent and undisputed across the whole Germanic family.

Adelbert sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1916, with 65 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Adelbert sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is transparent, undisputed and unusually good.
  • A documented tenth-century missionary bishop stands behind it.
  • Del and Bert are two short forms at very different registers.
What to consider
  • Albert is much the commoner form and will often be substituted.
  • Three syllables and a spelling that has to be dictated.
  • It is strongly period-coded to the nineteenth century.
