Where it comes from

Our story of Addi

Our reading is that naming devices have a refractory period and it is measurable. A spelling or ending in heavy use becomes strongly associated with the cohort that used it, and while that cohort is alive and adult the device reads as belonging to them: a name spelled with an -i in 1990 read as a woman in her twenties, not as a child. Once the cohort ages past the point of being anyone's reference, the association fades and the device becomes available again. Fifty years is a reasonable estimate of that interval, and it matches other cases: the -ie names of the 1880s returned in the 2010s, the mid-century -lyn ending returned after the 1990s, and the -i ending is back now. What comes back is never quite the same, because the stems have changed, and Addi sits on a stem that did not exist in 1972.

Hebrew adam, with the English surname Addison

Addi is a short form of Addison, Adeline, Adelaide or Addisyn. Addison is a patronymic surname, son of Adam, from Hebrew adam, a human being. Adelaide and Adeline descend from Germanic adal, noble, and heid, kind or sort. Which lies behind a given bearer is not recoverable. The -i ending is a spelling device rather than a source. It peaks in 2023.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Addi went to 12 girls in 2025, but Addy, Adi and Ady are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 65, which makes it the 895th most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,467 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 24,727 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 133,939 for Addi itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
