The story of Adali
Germanic names entered Spain with the Visigoths and stayed: Adela, Adelaida, Alfonso and Elvira all arrived that way. Spanish-speaking families have shortened and softened them ever since, producing Adali, Adaly, Adalia and Adalie, all of them said much the same and none of them fixed in spelling. In the last two decades the whole set has been growing in American records, alongside Adalyn and Adelina, which are the English-language versions of the same instinct.
Meaningscholars disagree
noble, through the Adela family
Two accounts. Most Adalis are short forms within the Adela and Adelaida family, from Germanic adal, noble. Separately, Adalia is a name in the book of Esther, one of the sons of Haman, of Persian origin and unexplained meaning. The two are unrelated and the spelling does not distinguish them.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Samar test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Adali's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Samar climbed just as high around 1998, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Samar's path sketches the road Adali is walking now.
Adali sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

- Two stress patterns circulate and the spelling settles neither.
- Adalyn is far commoner in English and will be assumed by people writing quickly.
