Where it comes from

The story of Abria

Alberich is a real figure as well as a name element: in the Nibelungenlied he is the dwarf who guards the treasure, and Wagner made him the one who forges the ring. The name traveled through Frankish into Norman French as Auberi and Aubrey and crossed to England in 1066, where it was a man's name for eight centuries before becoming a woman's in America. The elf element is worth pausing on. Germanic peoples used names of spirits and creatures freely — alf for elves, ing for a god, bern for a bear, wulf for a wolf — because a name was a wish about what would stand behind the child, and elves were the kind of thing you wanted on your side rather than the other one.

Not established

No source has been established for this spelling. It sits closest to Aubrey, from Germanic Alberic — alf, elf, with ric, ruler — and to modern American names built on Abri- and Bri-. Neither has been shown to be the parent, and the compound has no meaning of its own.

Abria sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1993, with 53 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Three short forms, two of which are full names elsewhere.
  • Three open syllables and nothing hard to say in any of them.
  • The sound family it belongs to is completely familiar.
What to consider
  • Aubrey and Bria are both commoner, so this will be heard as a version of one of them.
  • The first vowel is said two ways and the spelling settles neither.
  • There is no documented meaning behind it.
