Where it comes from

The story of Abelino

A sixteenth-century Italian priest took the name of his birthplace in religion and became well enough known that the place name traveled as a personal name across the Catholic world — which is how a hazelnut-growing town in Campania ended up on birth certificates in Mexico and Texas. The nut itself carries the name in botany: the hazel's Latin species name is the town's, and the word avellana is the ordinary Spanish for a hazelnut to this day. So a child called this is named for a saint, who was named for a town, which was named for a tree, whose nuts are still sold under the town's name in every Spanish-speaking country.

Meaning

From Avellino

The name comes from a town in southern Italy, and the town's name comes from the hazelnut — the Latin word for the nut is built on the place, or the place on the nut, and either way the two are the same word. The b in this spelling is a Spanish spelling of a v and does not connect the name to Abel.

Four syllables with the stress on the third. Spanish says b and v almost identically, which is why both spellings exist.

Fashion outlook

Abelino sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is musical, unambiguous in Spanish and easy for English speakers to approximate.
  • It has a real place behind it that can be pointed at.
  • Lino works as a short form in both languages.
What to consider
  • Avelino is the commoner spelling and his will be written that way by Spanish speakers.
  • The first syllable will be read as the biblical Abel, which it is not.
  • Four syllables will be shortened in American use.
