The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Walter
ruler of the army
The Germanic waldan, to rule, and heri, an army. The compound is one of the oldest and commonest patterns in the Germanic name stock.
Waldheri → Walter
How it traveled
The name's most unfortunate bearer set out for Jerusalem before the real armies did. Walter Sansavoir — Walter the Penniless, in English — led part of the People's Crusade, a mass of poorly armed pilgrims who marched across Europe ahead of the knights, fought their way through Hungary, crossed into Asia Minor without waiting for anyone, and were destroyed almost to the last man.
Zayn
Beauty, grace, adornment
From the Arabic root z-y-n, tied to the verb zāna, 'to adorn'. The related noun zīna means ornament or finery.
zayn (Arabic, 'beauty') → Zayn al-Abidin → Zayn al-Din → Zinedine → Zayn
How it traveled
Zayn comes from Arabic, where zayn means beauty or adornment, and it has been in continuous use across the Muslim world since the early centuries of Islam. It is the name of Ali ibn Husayn, the great-grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, known as Zayn al-Abidin — 'ornament of the worshippers' — who lived in the seventh and eighth centuries.

Out loud, and in short
Walter
WAWL-tur
Two syllables with the weight at the front. German says VAL-ter, and the French and Italian forms are unrecognizable as the same name.
- Walt — The standard American short form, used in speech far more than the full name.
- Wally — The affectionate form; in British English it is also a mild insult, which travelers discover.
- Watt — The medieval English short form; it survives now only as a surname.
Zayn
ZAYN
One syllable, rhyming with rain. Identical in English to the separate name Zane. In Arabic the vowel is a true diphthong, closer to ZA-yn, and speakers often keep that pronunciation at home.
- Z — The usual informal shortening among friends and siblings; not used on documents.
- Zay — Casual spoken form, also used as a short form of Zayden and Isaiah.
- Zayny — An affectionate family form, mostly used with young children.

The trade-offs, name by name
Walter
Strengths
- Everyone can spell it and say it on first hearing across the English-speaking world.
- Walt is a short form that has aged better than most of its generation.
- It has an unbroken documented history of more than a thousand years and forms in every western European language.
To consider
- It is strongly associated with an older generation, though it has begun to return.
- The spelling is recorded for a small number of girls, though it reads overwhelmingly as a boy's name.
- In British English the short form Wally carries a meaning nobody wants.
Zayn
Strengths
- One syllable and four letters — easy to say, easy to write, and it fits alongside almost any surname without crowding it.
- The meaning is settled and widely known: beauty, adornment. Anyone in an Arabic-speaking family will recognize it immediately.
- Documented in continuous use for well over a millennium, so a modern-sounding name comes with a very long record behind it.
To consider
- It will be heard as Zane, and written that way. Expect to spell it out often, and to correct Zain and Zayne too — all three spellings are in real use.
- One contemporary bearer drove most of the recent rise in the US, and for people of a certain age the name will call up that singer first. That association will fade with time, but it is strong right now.
- The wave here is very new, so most Zayns in the country are children. A boy with this name will rarely meet an adult who shares it, and rarely meet another in his own classroom either.
