II

The names themselves

Where each name comes from

Harvey

From Old Breton elements meaning "battle" and either "worthy" or "blazing"

The first element, haer, is agreed on: battle, carnage. The second, viu, is read either as "worthy" — giving "battle-worthy" — or as "blazing", giving "blazing in battle". Both readings are long-standing and neither has won.

Haerviu → Hervé → Herveus → Hervey → Harvey

How it traveled

The name begins in Brittany as Haerviu or Aeruiu, and belongs to Saint Hervé, a sixth-century Breton hermit and bard venerated across the region and invoked in matters of the eyes. Breton knights and settlers carried it into England with the Norman conquest of 1066, where clerks wrote it Herveus in Latin and Hervey in the vernacular, and it settled in as one of the commonest names of medieval England.

Walter

ruler of the army

The Germanic waldan, to rule, and heri, an army. The compound is one of the oldest and commonest patterns in the Germanic name stock.

Waldheri → Walter

How it traveled

The name's most unfortunate bearer set out for Jerusalem before the real armies did. Walter Sansavoir — Walter the Penniless, in English — led part of the People's Crusade, a mass of poorly armed pilgrims who marched across Europe ahead of the knights, fought their way through Hungary, crossed into Asia Minor without waiting for anyone, and were destroyed almost to the last man.

Out loud, and in short

Harvey

HAR-vee

Stress on the first syllable. No ambiguity in English — people read it right the first time, and have for centuries.

  • Harv — The standard informal short form in American English, used among family and friends.
  • Harve — An older spelling of the same short form, more often seen in records than heard today.

Walter

WAWL-tur

Two syllables with the weight at the front. German says VAL-ter, and the French and Italian forms are unrecognizable as the same name.

  • Walt — The standard American short form, used in speech far more than the full name.
  • Wally — The affectionate form; in British English it is also a mild insult, which travelers discover.
  • Watt — The medieval English short form; it survives now only as a surname.

The trade-offs, name by name

Harvey

Strengths

  • One dominant spelling in the United States, and one that everyone can already read and write without being asked twice.
  • Pronounced the same way by every English speaker who sees it; no correcting required.
  • An unbroken record in English since the Norman conquest, so it is old without being obscure.

To consider

  • Two loud modern associations share the name: a retired Atlantic hurricane, and a film producer at the center of a criminal case that dominated the news. Both are recent and specific rather than attached to the name itself, but they are worth naming out loud.
  • The nickname options are thin — Harv, and not much else. If short forms matter to you, this one mostly stays whole.
  • It is strongly represented among people now in their eighties, so some will hear it as a grandfather's name. That is exactly the position Walter and Louis were in before they came back.

Walter

Strengths

  • Everyone can spell it and say it on first hearing across the English-speaking world.
  • Walt is a short form that has aged better than most of its generation.
  • It has an unbroken documented history of more than a thousand years and forms in every western European language.

To consider

  • It is strongly associated with an older generation, though it has begun to return.
  • The spelling is recorded for a small number of girls, though it reads overwhelmingly as a boy's name.
  • In British English the short form Wally carries a meaning nobody wants.
