II

The names themselves

Where each name comes from

Rowen

'little red one' (Irish) or 'rowan tree'

Two genuine sources feed this name and neither cancels the other. Through the Irish surname Ó Ruadháin it goes back to ruadh, 'red' or 'red-haired', giving a sense of 'little red one'. Through Scots and northern English it is simply the rowan, the mountain-ash tree, a word carried in from Old Norse. Parents can honestly claim either.

Ruadhán → Ó Ruadháin → Rowan → Rowen

How it traveled

The older strand is Gaelic: Ruadhán, a personal name from ruadh, 'red', which hardened into the surname Ó Ruadháin and then into the English surnames Rowan and Rowen. Alongside it, quite separately, the rowan tree gave Scotland and northern England a nature word that was hedged about with folk protective customs and eventually used as a first name.

Royal

Royal, kingly

From Latin regalis, built on the root reg- that also gives rex, regina, regalia and the English word regal.

regalis (Latin) → roial (Old French) → royal (Middle English) → Royall / Royal (English surname) → Royal

How it traveled

The word arrived in English after the Norman Conquest as roial, borrowed from Old French, which had it from Latin regalis. Like many English adjectives of rank, it hardened into a surname — Royal and Royall — for households attached to the crown's lands or offices, and surnames of that kind were exactly the stock American parents drew on for first names in the nineteenth century.

Out loud, and in short

Rowen

ROH-en

Stress on the first syllable, second syllable light — the same shape as Owen with an R in front. Some families say ROH-in; both are accepted and nobody corrects either.

  • Ro — The most common informal clip, used at home and among friends.
  • Rowe — Informal, and also a standing English surname, so it reads as a full word rather than a baby name.
  • Row — Casual spoken shortening; identical in sound to Ro but usually written this way by people who know the full spelling.

Royal

ROY-uhl

Two syllables, stress on the first, exactly like the everyday adjective. In quick speech the second syllable often collapses toward ROYL.

  • Roy — The obvious short form, and a long-established given name in its own right — familiar across generations in the US, Ireland and the Netherlands.
  • Ro — Informal, family-level; used the same way Rosie or Romeo get clipped.
  • R.J. — Initials-based, common in the US when a middle name starting with J is in play; usually informal or sporting.

One short form, two names

  • Rowen and Royal both shorten to Ro.

Is it right for you

Choose by what you want

Choose Rowen if you want…

  • a name fewer children share#486 in 2025 — rowen will almost certainly be the only one in school
  • a name on the way upup 55 places on the charts in five years
  • a newer arrivalRowen entered the US charts in 1944

Choose Royal if you want…

  • a name most people already know#476 in 2025, 640 babies that year
  • a name past its most crowded yearsRoyal is stepping back from its peak
  • a long American recordRoyal was already in use when US records began in 1880

Each line is a measured difference between the two names — a rank, a count, a recorded form — never a judgement of either. Save the one that answers your question; it lands on your shortlist.

The trade-offs, name by name

Rowen

Strengths

  • Instantly sayable in English: it rhymes with Owen and shares its sound with Rowan, so almost no one hesitates on first reading.
  • Two documented meanings to choose from — the Irish 'red' and the rowan tree — which gives a family real room for its own story.
  • Works for a son or a daughter on the same spelling, with no change in pronunciation or nickname.

To consider

  • Rowan is the better-known spelling, and Rowen will be corrected to it on forms, cards and class lists fairly often. Worth deciding early whether you'll bother fixing it every time.
  • Because it sits so close in sound to both Owen and Rowan, the name may feel more common in a room than it actually is — a child could share a playground with several near-namesakes and no exact one.
  • Most go to boys, so a girl named Rowen will occasionally be read as male on paper before anyone meets her — a small, fixable friction rather than a real problem.

Royal

Strengths

  • Spelled and pronounced correctly on sight by any English speaker — no dictation, no correction, no alternate spelling to fend off.
  • In continuous use as an American given name for well over a century, so it is neither an invention nor a revival.
  • Comes with Roy already attached: a short form that has stood alone as a name for generations, in several countries.

To consider

  • It is a word with a claim inside it. Most people hear it as a name and move on, but a few will read it as a statement, and the odd pun about royalty or a royal pain is close at hand.
  • The name is attached to a great many products, hotels and brands, so it turns up constantly in ordinary reading and advertising in a way that Tanner or Cassian do not.
  • Nearby forms like Royale and Royalty are used mostly for girls in the US, which means the occasional assumption about spelling or sex before a Royal walks into the room.
