II

The names themselves

Where each name comes from

Royal

Royal, kingly

From Latin regalis, built on the root reg- that also gives rex, regina, regalia and the English word regal.

regalis (Latin) → roial (Old French) → royal (Middle English) → Royall / Royal (English surname) → Royal

How it traveled

The word arrived in English after the Norman Conquest as roial, borrowed from Old French, which had it from Latin regalis. Like many English adjectives of rank, it hardened into a surname — Royal and Royall — for households attached to the crown's lands or offices, and surnames of that kind were exactly the stock American parents drew on for first names in the nineteenth century.

Samson

From Hebrew shemesh, "sun" — often read as "little sun" or "of the sun"

The root shemesh is not disputed; the -on ending is generally taken as a diminutive or affectionate suffix, which is where the "little sun" rendering comes from.

Shimshon → Sampsōn → Sampson → Samson

How it traveled

The name begins as Hebrew Shimshon, borne by the long-haired judge of the Book of Judges whose strength, blindness and final act in the Philistine temple make one of the most-retold episodes in scripture. The Greek translators of the Hebrew Bible wrote it Sampsōn, and Latin passed that spelling into medieval Europe, where it attached to Saint Samson of Dol, a sixth-century bishop honored in Brittany, Wales and Cornwall.

Out loud, and in short

Royal

ROY-uhl

Two syllables, stress on the first, exactly like the everyday adjective. In quick speech the second syllable often collapses toward ROYL.

  • Roy — The obvious short form, and a long-established given name in its own right — familiar across generations in the US, Ireland and the Netherlands.
  • Ro — Informal, family-level; used the same way Rosie or Romeo get clipped.
  • R.J. — Initials-based, common in the US when a middle name starting with J is in play; usually informal or sporting.

Samson

SAM-suhn

Stress on the first syllable. In Spanish and Italian the stress moves to the end: san-SON, san-SO-neh.

  • Sam — The everyday short form, and a standalone given name in its own right — shared with Samuel, so a Sam is rarely assumed to be a Samson.
  • Sammy — Informal and affectionate, used mostly in childhood and within families, though some men keep it for life.
  • Sonny — Occasional, drawn from the second syllable rather than the first; also stands alone as a given name.

The trade-offs, name by name

Royal

Strengths

  • Spelled and pronounced correctly on sight by any English speaker — no dictation, no correction, no alternate spelling to fend off.
  • In continuous use as an American given name for well over a century, so it is neither an invention nor a revival.
  • Comes with Roy already attached: a short form that has stood alone as a name for generations, in several countries.

To consider

  • It is a word with a claim inside it. Most people hear it as a name and move on, but a few will read it as a statement, and the odd pun about royalty or a royal pain is close at hand.
  • The name is attached to a great many products, hotels and brands, so it turns up constantly in ordinary reading and advertising in a way that Tanner or Cassian do not.
  • Nearby forms like Royale and Royalty are used mostly for girls in the US, which means the occasional assumption about spelling or sex before a Royal walks into the room.

Samson

Strengths

  • Comes with Sam already built in — a short form in continuous English use for centuries, so no nickname has to be invented.
  • The spelling is familiar to anyone who has read the Bible or met the surname, so it is usually written correctly on the first try.
  • A documented record stretching from ancient Hebrew through Greek, Latin, Breton and English without a break.

To consider

  • The biblical story is inescapable: strength, long hair, Delilah and the haircut. Expect jokes about muscles or about needing a trim, mostly good-natured, mostly from adults.
  • Sam is shared with Samuel, which is far more common. He may spend some of his life clarifying which longer name the Sam belongs to.
  • Sampson with a p is a well-established variant, so the spelling will sometimes need saying aloud.
