The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Edgar
rich spear; prosperity-spear
Two Old English elements: a word meaning wealth or good fortune, and the word for a spear. Spear names were the largest family in old Germanic naming, because a spear was the one weapon every free man owned, and the compounds were compliments rather than descriptions.
Eadgar → Edgar
How it traveled
Edgar the Peaceable was crowned late — he had been king for fourteen years before the ceremony — and the service that was written for him, apparently by Dunstan, is the reason English coronations look the way they do. The order of it is essentially unchanged: the recognition, the oath, the anointing with oil under a canopy, the delivery of the regalia, the crowning, the enthroning, the homage.
Rowen
'little red one' (Irish) or 'rowan tree'
Two genuine sources feed this name and neither cancels the other. Through the Irish surname Ó Ruadháin it goes back to ruadh, 'red' or 'red-haired', giving a sense of 'little red one'. Through Scots and northern English it is simply the rowan, the mountain-ash tree, a word carried in from Old Norse. Parents can honestly claim either.
Ruadhán → Ó Ruadháin → Rowan → Rowen
How it traveled
The older strand is Gaelic: Ruadhán, a personal name from ruadh, 'red', which hardened into the surname Ó Ruadháin and then into the English surnames Rowan and Rowen. Alongside it, quite separately, the rowan tree gave Scotland and northern England a nature word that was hedged about with folk protective customs and eventually used as a first name.

Out loud, and in short
Edgar
ED-gar
Two syllables with the stress at the front in English. Spanish speakers say ed-GAR with the weight at the back, and both are heard in American families — often within the same one.
- Ed — The front of the name, and the everyday form for most bearers.
- Eddie — The affectionate form, shared with several unrelated names.
- Gary — Built from the back of the name; used in some American families as a deliberate alternative to Ed.
Rowen
ROH-en
Stress on the first syllable, second syllable light — the same shape as Owen with an R in front. Some families say ROH-in; both are accepted and nobody corrects either.
- Ro — The most common informal clip, used at home and among friends.
- Rowe — Informal, and also a standing English surname, so it reads as a full word rather than a baby name.
- Row — Casual spoken shortening; identical in sound to Ro but usually written this way by people who know the full spelling.

The trade-offs, name by name
Edgar
Strengths
- It is spelled identically in English, Spanish, French and German.
- Ed and Eddie are both ready-made and need no explanation anywhere.
- The meaning is documented all the way back and has not shifted.
To consider
- English and Spanish stress it differently, so a bilingual family hears two versions of one name.
- The horror writer is a permanent association for English-speaking readers.
- It was recorded for daughters too in earlier decades, though very rarely.
Rowen
Strengths
- Instantly sayable in English: it rhymes with Owen and shares its sound with Rowan, so almost no one hesitates on first reading.
- Two documented meanings to choose from — the Irish 'red' and the rowan tree — which gives a family real room for its own story.
- Works for a son or a daughter on the same spelling, with no change in pronunciation or nickname.
To consider
- Rowan is the better-known spelling, and Rowen will be corrected to it on forms, cards and class lists fairly often. Worth deciding early whether you'll bother fixing it every time.
- Because it sits so close in sound to both Owen and Rowan, the name may feel more common in a room than it actually is — a child could share a playground with several near-namesakes and no exact one.
- Most go to boys, so a girl named Rowen will occasionally be read as male on paper before anyone meets her — a small, fixable friction rather than a real problem.
