II

The names themselves

Where each name comes from

Evander

good man

The Greek name Euandros is transparently eu, 'good', plus the stem of anēr, 'man' — that part is not in doubt. What is contested is how an English-speaking Evander got here. Alongside the classical line, Scots used Evander as an English stand-in for the Gaelic Iomhar, a name of Norse descent (Ívarr) with no connection to Greek at all beyond a rough similarity of sound. Two roads, one spelling.

Euandros → Evander (Latin) → Evandro → Evander

How it traveled

The name belongs first to Greek, where Euandros was a real personal name before it was a literary one. Roman writers latinized it to Evander and gave it to the Arcadian settler of the Palatine — Virgil in the Aeneid and Livy in his history both tell the story, which made the name a fixture of the Latin classroom for centuries afterwards.

Marvin

Not established

The name descends from an Old Welsh name whose elements are disputed. The second half is generally connected to a word meaning eminent or fair; the first half has no agreed reading. It has nothing to do with the English word for a wonder, however strongly the resemblance suggests otherwise. That connection is a folk etymology, and it is the single most common thing said about this name in print.

An Old Welsh name of uncertain meaning → Written into English several ways at once → Marvin settling as the American form → Very widely used through the first half of the twentieth century

How it traveled

The board game bought the rights to a set of Atlantic City street names, and whoever transcribed them got one wrong. The real place is a residential development in Margate, just outside the city limits, spelled with an e; the game has spelled it with an i since the nineteen thirties, and the manufacturer eventually issued a formal apology to the residents in the nineteen nineties, sixty years late.

Out loud, and in short

Evander

ih-VAN-der

Stress lands on the middle syllable. Some families say ee-VAN-der with a fuller first vowel; both are current, and the second syllable rhymes with 'van' either way. The classical Latin would have been eh-WAN-der, which nobody uses in English.

  • Ev — The plainest short form; works in the same register as Ed or Al, and is used by adults as well as children.
  • Van — Takes the stressed middle syllable; also stands alone as a given name and as a Dutch surname particle.
  • Vander — Informal, family-level; keeps more of the name's rhythm than Van does.
  • Evan — Used casually as a short form, though Evan is an independent Welsh name in its own right, not historically derived from Evander.

Marvin

MAR-vin

Two syllables, stress on the first. The Welsh original has an f where this has a v, and Welsh says that f as a v, so the American spelling is closer to the sound of the original than the Welsh spelling looks.

  • Marv — The standard clipping, blunt and affectionate, and the form most Marvins actually answer to.
  • Vin — Taken from the back, which is unexpected and sounds nothing like the front.
  • Mars — Modern and unrelated to the etymology, and it works better on a child than on an adult.

  • a name on the way upup 348 places on the charts in five years
  • a name with more sound in itEvander runs 3 syllables, Marvin 2

  • a name with fewer syllablesMarvin is 2 syllables to Evander's 3
  • a long American recordMarvin was already in use when US records began in 1880

The trade-offs, name by name

Evander

Strengths

  • Two ready-made short forms, Ev and Van, both of which stand up on their own and neither of which needs explaining.
  • Every syllable is already familiar in English from Evan and Alexander, so people can usually spell it after hearing it once.
  • A continuous written record from Greek personal names through Virgil and Livy to the present — nothing about it was invented recently.

To consider

  • Almost every Evander will be the only one in his school. That means no surname initial to share, but it also means a lifetime of being heard as Evan first and corrected second.
  • The name's wave is very recent, so nearly everyone carrying it right now is a child. It reads as current rather than inherited, and there is no generation of grown Evanders to make it feel ordinary.
  • The best-known American bearer by far is the heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield, and for many adults that is the first association the name calls up. Whether that is a pleasure or a shadow is a matter of taste.

Marvin

Strengths

  • It is completely familiar, entirely unambiguous and has never needed spelling out.
  • Marv is warm in a way that few two-syllable men's names manage.
  • It has a genuine Welsh history rather than the invented one usually printed for it.

To consider

  • It is strongly tied to a generation and carries that association immediately.
  • There is no meaning to give, and the obvious English word is not the answer.
  • The spelling is on the register for girls as well, in very small numbers.
