The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Evander
good man
The Greek name Euandros is transparently eu, 'good', plus the stem of anēr, 'man' — that part is not in doubt. What is contested is how an English-speaking Evander got here. Alongside the classical line, Scots used Evander as an English stand-in for the Gaelic Iomhar, a name of Norse descent (Ívarr) with no connection to Greek at all beyond a rough similarity of sound. Two roads, one spelling.
Euandros → Evander (Latin) → Evandro → Evander
How it traveled
The name belongs first to Greek, where Euandros was a real personal name before it was a literary one. Roman writers latinized it to Evander and gave it to the Arcadian settler of the Palatine — Virgil in the Aeneid and Livy in his history both tell the story, which made the name a fixture of the Latin classroom for centuries afterwards.
Jayson
healer
From Greek Iason, connected to the verb iasthai, 'to heal'.
Iason → Jason → Jayson
How it traveled
The name begins as Greek Iason, borne in myth by the captain of the Argo. Among Greek-speaking Jews of the Hellenistic period, Iason was adopted as a familiar-sounding stand-in for the Hebrew name Yeshua, which is why a Jason turns up in the New Testament as Paul's host in Thessalonica.

Out loud, and in short
Evander
ih-VAN-der
Stress lands on the middle syllable. Some families say ee-VAN-der with a fuller first vowel; both are current, and the second syllable rhymes with 'van' either way. The classical Latin would have been eh-WAN-der, which nobody uses in English.
- Ev — The plainest short form; works in the same register as Ed or Al, and is used by adults as well as children.
- Van — Takes the stressed middle syllable; also stands alone as a given name and as a Dutch surname particle.
- Vander — Informal, family-level; keeps more of the name's rhythm than Van does.
- Evan — Used casually as a short form, though Evan is an independent Welsh name in its own right, not historically derived from Evander.
Jayson
JAY-suhn
Two syllables, stress on the first. Pronounced exactly like Jason — the spelling changes nothing you say aloud.
- Jay — The standard short form, and a long-established given name in its own right.
- Jase — Informal, common among younger bearers; also registered as a standalone name in the US.
- Jayce — Informal respelling of Jase; Jace is separately used as a full given name.
- J — Initial used as a casual address, mostly among friends and teammates.

The trade-offs, name by name
Evander
Strengths
- Two ready-made short forms, Ev and Van, both of which stand up on their own and neither of which needs explaining.
- Every syllable is already familiar in English from Evan and Alexander, so people can usually spell it after hearing it once.
- A continuous written record from Greek personal names through Virgil and Livy to the present — nothing about it was invented recently.
To consider
- Almost every Evander will be the only one in his school. That means no surname initial to share, but it also means a lifetime of being heard as Evan first and corrected second.
- The name's wave is very recent, so nearly everyone carrying it right now is a child. It reads as current rather than inherited, and there is no generation of grown Evanders to make it feel ordinary.
- The best-known American bearer by far is the heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield, and for many adults that is the first association the name calls up. Whether that is a pleasure or a shadow is a matter of taste.
Jayson
Strengths
- Spelled as it sounds: the -ay- removes any doubt about the first syllable for English speakers.
- Comes with ready-made short forms — Jay and Jase — that both work on their own.
- Rests on a name with an unbroken record from Greek antiquity through the New Testament to the present.
To consider
- Jason is the default spelling, so expect a lifetime of gentle corrections: forms, rosters and coffee cups will often come back with the shorter version.
- Because the two spellings sound identical, the distinction only exists in writing. Anyone who hears the name will have to be told which one it is.
- Most people carrying this spelling today are adults rather than children, so it currently reads as a grown man's name more than a nursery one — which is also what makes it uncrowded.
