The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Carmelo
of Mount Carmel; the mountain name itself means garden or orchard
The Hebrew karmel is read as 'garden' or 'orchard'; it is often parsed further as kerem el, 'vineyard of God'. Either way, the name reaches a child by way of the mountain and the religious order named for it, not directly from the Hebrew word.
Karmel → Carmelus → Carmelo
How it traveled
Mount Carmel in what is now northern Israel appears throughout the Hebrew Bible as a place of prophets and green heights. In the twelfth century a group of hermits settled on its slopes and grew into the Carmelite order, whose devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel spread across Catholic Europe.
Julien
belonging to Julius
Julien comes from the Latin Iulianus, formed from the Roman family name Iulius. What Iulius itself meant is a separate and unsettled question: it has been connected to the god Jupiter and, in Roman tradition, to the Greek word ioulos, 'downy-bearded' — neither reading is established.
Iulius → Iulianus → Julianus → Julien
How it traveled
The name begins as Iulianus, a Latin adjective marking someone as belonging to the Iulii, the Roman family that produced Julius Caesar. Once Iulianus became a name in its own right it spread widely across the empire — the fourth-century Roman emperor Julian carried it — and it passed into the Christian calendar through several early saints, among them Julian the Hospitaller, whose medieval cult left villages and churches called Saint-Julien scattered across France.

Out loud, and in short
Carmelo
kar-MEL-oh
In Spanish and Italian the middle vowel is a clean 'eh': kar-MEH-loh. Stress stays on the second syllable in every language that uses it, so the name survives crossing between them intact.
- Melo — The dominant informal short form in American English, strongly reinforced by basketball; used on its own in speech but rarely on paper.
- Carmy — Family-level nickname, more common in Italian-American households.
- Mel — Plain, easy short form; also stands alone as a given name from Melvin and Melchior.
- Carmelito — Spanish affectionate diminutive, generally used by relatives for a child.
Julien
zhoo-LYEN
That is the French pronunciation, with a soft zh at the start and a nasal ending. In the US it is commonly said JOO-lee-en or JOO-lyen, with the stress moved forward. Both are in real use; deciding which one you answer to saves a lot of small corrections later.
- Jules — The long-standing French short form, and a standalone given name in its own right in France and increasingly in English-speaking countries.
- Juju — Affectionate and family-only in French usage, generally left behind in childhood.
- Jay — An English-language initial nickname, used casually rather than on documents.

The trade-offs, name by name
Carmelo
Strengths
- Spelled the same in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and English, with no transliteration to negotiate.
- An unbroken record in US births stretching back more than a century — familiar, but a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate.
- Ready-made short forms already in real use: Melo, Carmy, Mel.
To consider
- The nickname Melo is closely tied to one very famous basketball player. Expect the association to come up, and expect strangers to reach for it uninvited.
- It is a name with explicit Catholic devotional roots. Many families choose it precisely for that; if the connection is not yours, know that it will often be assumed.
- Close neighbors cause slips: Carmela, Carmine and Carmen are all in circulation, and 'caramel' will happen at least once.
Julien
Strengths
- Recognizable almost everywhere: the same name exists as Julian, Julián, Giuliano, Iulian and Julião, so it travels without needing translation.
- An unbroken written record from Roman Latin to the present, which puts it outside the reach of any single fashion.
- Comes with Jules already attached — a short form with centuries of use behind it, not one you have to invent.
To consider
- The single letter that separates Julien from Julian will need correcting for life — on rosters, forms and email addresses. Most bearers develop a quick, unbothered way of saying "Julien with an e-n".
- Pronunciation is genuinely split between the French zhoo-LYEN and the anglicized JOO-lee-en. Neither is wrong, but a family that has not chosen one will hear both.
- Because Julien and Julian are heard as near-identical, some people will assume the French spelling is a variant rather than the standard form it is in French.
