Where each name comes from
Julien
belonging to Julius
Julien comes from the Latin Iulianus, formed from the Roman family name Iulius. What Iulius itself meant is a separate and unsettled question: it has been connected to the god Jupiter and, in Roman tradition, to the Greek word ioulos, 'downy-bearded' — neither reading is established.
Iulius → Iulianus → Julianus → Julien
How it traveled
The name begins as Iulianus, a Latin adjective marking someone as belonging to the Iulii, the Roman family that produced Julius Caesar. Once Iulianus became a name in its own right it spread widely across the empire — the fourth-century Roman emperor Julian carried it — and it passed into the Christian calendar through several early saints, among them Julian the Hospitaller, whose medieval cult left villages and churches called Saint-Julien scattered across France.
Kenai
Not established
What is documented is the geography and the history behind it. Russian traders in Alaska called the Dena'ina Athabascan people of the area by a term written down as Kenaitze, and the river, bay and peninsula took their name from that. The underlying sense of the word itself has never been settled in the reference literature, and the tidy translations you'll find circulating online don't hold up. So: a name for a people and a coastline, rather than a name with a dictionary gloss.
Kenaitze — the term recorded for the Dena'ina people of Alaska → Kenai — river, bay and peninsula in southcentral Alaska → Kenai — American given name
How it traveled
The Kenai Peninsula, the Kenai River and the city of Kenai all take their names from the Dena'ina people of southcentral Alaska, by way of the term Russian traders used for them in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. For most of its life the word stayed on maps and in salmon-fishing lore rather than on birth certificates.

Out loud, and in short
Julien
zhoo-LYEN
That is the French pronunciation, with a soft zh at the start and a nasal ending. In the US it is commonly said JOO-lee-en or JOO-lyen, with the stress moved forward. Both are in real use; deciding which one you answer to saves a lot of small corrections later.
- Jules — The long-standing French short form, and a standalone given name in its own right in France and increasingly in English-speaking countries.
- Juju — Affectionate and family-only in French usage, generally left behind in childhood.
- Jay — An English-language initial nickname, used casually rather than on documents.
Kenai
KEE-nye
That is how it is said in Alaska: stress on the first syllable, the ending rhyming with "eye". Some American families use ken-EYE or KEE-nay instead, and all three are heard. Whichever you pick, expect to say it twice at first meetings.
- Ken — The obvious clip, and a standalone given name in its own right with a long English-language record.
- Kenny — Informal, mostly used at home and among friends; also a full given name for men of older generations.
- Nai — Informal, drawn from the second syllable; used within families rather than on paperwork.

The trade-offs, name by name
Julien
Strengths
- Recognizable almost everywhere: the same name exists as Julian, Julián, Giuliano, Iulian and Julião, so it travels without needing translation.
- An unbroken written record from Roman Latin to the present, which puts it outside the reach of any single fashion.
- Comes with Jules already attached — a short form with centuries of use behind it, not one you have to invent.
To consider
- The single letter that separates Julien from Julian will need correcting for life — on rosters, forms and email addresses. Most bearers develop a quick, unbothered way of saying "Julien with an e-n".
- Pronunciation is genuinely split between the French zhoo-LYEN and the anglicized JOO-lee-en. Neither is wrong, but a family that has not chosen one will hear both.
- Because Julien and Julian are heard as near-identical, some people will assume the French spelling is a variant rather than the standard form it is in French.
Kenai
Strengths
- Two syllables, six letters, and no silent letters to explain — most people can spell it once they've heard the pronunciation you use.
- Comes with ready-made short forms, Ken and Nai, both of which have been in ordinary use for generations.
- Tied to a real and findable place on the map, which gives the name a story that doesn't depend on fashion.
To consider
- The pronunciation genuinely varies — KEE-nye, ken-EYE, KEE-nay all circulate — so you'll be correcting people, and so will he. Choosing one and saying it consistently from the start helps more than anything else.
- For anyone who grew up with Brother Bear, the film will be the first association, not Alaska. That fades as a generation ages, but it's worth knowing which reference you're walking into.
- In writing it can get mixed up with Kenya, Kanai or Kenai's near-neighbors on the page. A clear spelling-out habit solves most of it.
