The names themselves

Where each name comes from

Aarav

Sanskrit ārava, "sound, cry, humming" — though the popular modern gloss is "peaceful"

Two readings compete, and they pull in opposite directions. Classical Sanskrit आरव (ārava) is a noun for sound: a cry, a roar, the humming of bees. Meanwhile the gloss circulated across Indian naming culture and English-language name lists is "peaceful, calm", sometimes "wise". The Sanskrit dictionary reading is the better-documented one; the "peaceful" reading is the one most families using the name today have in mind. Both are genuinely in use.

Sanskrit ārava → Hindi/Marathi आरव → Arav → Aarav

How it traveled

Aarav belongs to a wave of short, vowel-forward names that became fashionable across urban India in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries — names light on syllables, easy in both Devanagari and Latin script, and drawn from Sanskrit vocabulary rather than from the older, longer epic names. It climbed quickly in Maharashtra, Delhi and Gujarat, and by the 2010s was among the most-given boys' names in India.

Carmelo

of Mount Carmel; the mountain name itself means garden or orchard

The Hebrew karmel is read as 'garden' or 'orchard'; it is often parsed further as kerem el, 'vineyard of God'. Either way, the name reaches a child by way of the mountain and the religious order named for it, not directly from the Hebrew word.

Karmel → Carmelus → Carmelo

How it traveled

Mount Carmel in what is now northern Israel appears throughout the Hebrew Bible as a place of prophets and green heights. In the twelfth century a group of hermits settled on its slopes and grew into the Carmelite order, whose devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel spread across Catholic Europe.

Out loud, and in short

Aarav

AH-rav

Stress on the first syllable. The "aa" marks a held vowel as in "father"; the second syllable is light, closer to "ruv" than to the "rav" in "ravish". Americans usually manage it on the first hearing, though some will flatten the opening vowel to a short a.

  • Aaru — The most common affectionate form in Indian families; informal, home use, rarely written on documents.
  • Aru — Same short form with the single vowel; also used independently as a nickname for other A-names.
  • Rav — An English-speaking-context clipping of the second syllable; less common, and overlaps with the separate name Rav.

Carmelo

kar-MEL-oh

In Spanish and Italian the middle vowel is a clean 'eh': kar-MEH-loh. Stress stays on the second syllable in every language that uses it, so the name survives crossing between them intact.

  • Melo — The dominant informal short form in American English, strongly reinforced by basketball; used on its own in speech but rarely on paper.
  • Carmy — Family-level nickname, more common in Italian-American households.
  • Mel — Plain, easy short form; also stands alone as a given name from Melvin and Melchior.
  • Carmelito — Spanish affectionate diminutive, generally used by relatives for a child.

The trade-offs, name by name

Aarav

Strengths

  • Two syllables, five letters, no silent letters — it is spelled the way it sounds once heard.
  • The same Latin spelling works in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and India, with a direct Devanagari equivalent behind it.
  • Has an established affectionate short form, Aaru, already in ordinary family use.

To consider

  • The meaning is genuinely unsettled. If you want the name to mean "peaceful", know that Sanskrit dictionaries give ārava as "sound" or "cry" — worth deciding which reading you are comfortable telling your child about.
  • Aarav, Arav and Aarv all circulate, so expect to spell it aloud fairly often. The doubled first vowel is the part people drop.
  • Its record in the United States is recent, so nearly everyone carrying it is still a child. There are no adult Aaravs in public life here yet to smooth the way — an opening rather than a problem.

Carmelo

Strengths

  • Spelled the same in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and English, with no transliteration to negotiate.
  • An unbroken record in US births stretching back more than a century — familiar, but a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate.
  • Ready-made short forms already in real use: Melo, Carmy, Mel.

To consider

  • The nickname Melo is closely tied to one very famous basketball player. Expect the association to come up, and expect strangers to reach for it uninvited.
  • It is a name with explicit Catholic devotional roots. Many families choose it precisely for that; if the connection is not yours, know that it will often be assumed.
  • Close neighbors cause slips: Carmela, Carmine and Carmen are all in circulation, and 'caramel' will happen at least once.
