Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Alayah
"high, exalted" through Arabic, or "ascent" through Hebrew
Alayah is a modern English spelling, and its meaning depends on which older name you trace it to. Arabic ʿāliyah is the feminine of ʿālī, "high, exalted, lofty." Hebrew aliyah means "ascent, going up" and is still the ordinary word for immigration to Israel. Both readings are solid for the parent names; what is not documented is which one any given American family had in mind, and some chose the spelling purely for its sound.
ʿĀlī → ʿĀliyah → Aaliyah → Aliyah → Alayah
How it traveled
The root is the Arabic ʿālī, "high," whose feminine form ʿāliyah has been in use as a name across the Arabic-speaking world for centuries. A separate Hebrew word, aliyah, "ascent," arrives at almost the same sound by a different road.
Journey
a day's travel; a trip
From Old French journée, 'a day's work or a day's traveling', which comes from Latin diurnus, 'of a day'. The 'day' sense is still visible in the French word for a day, journée.
diurnus (Latin) → journée (Old French) → journei (Middle English) → Journey
How it traveled
The word arrived in England after the Norman Conquest and settled into Middle English as journei, meaning the distance one could cover in a single day — in medieval usage, roughly twenty miles. Over time the day dropped out of the meaning and only the traveling remained, until a journey could be any length at all.

Out loud, and in short
Alayah
uh-LAY-uh
The spelling points most clearly to uh-LAY-uh in American English. Some families use ah-LEE-uh, following the Aaliyah side of the family, so it is worth deciding which one you mean and saying it the same way from the start.
- Laya — Informal, taken from the last two syllables; also used as a given name on its own.
- Allie — Informal and long established in English as a short form for many Al- names.
- Aya — Informal; also a standalone given name in Arabic and Japanese naming.
- Ali — Informal; shared with Alison, Alexandra and others, and a men's name in its own right in Arabic.
- Also Lala.
Journey
JUR-nee
Two syllables, stress on the first, exactly like the everyday word. Rhymes with attorney.
- Journ — The obvious clipped form, used informally at home; no long tradition behind it, since the name itself is young.
- Jo — Informal, and a well-established given name in its own right for both women and men.
- JoJo — A playful doubling used mostly in early childhood.

The trade-offs, name by name
Alayah
Strengths
- Sits inside a sound family Americans already know — Aaliyah, Aliyah, Aleah — so the name needs no explanation when spoken aloud.
- Phonetic on the page: a reader who has never seen it can usually make a reasonable attempt.
- Carries real depth in two languages, Arabic and Hebrew, without belonging exclusively to either tradition in English use.
To consider
- The spelling will be corrected often. Aaliyah, Aliyah, Aleah and Alaya are all in use, and forms will come back with one of them instead. Most families with these names simply learn to spell it out early.
- Two pronunciations circulate in this family, uh-LAY-uh and ah-LEE-uh, so expect an occasional first-meeting mix-up.
- The sound is very much of the present moment, and the name's wave has crested rather than climbed. That means few classmates share it, but it will also read as belonging to a particular era of naming later on.
Journey
Strengths
- A spelling almost no one gets wrong — it is an ordinary English word that most people have written down before.
- The meaning needs no footnote; anyone who hears it already knows what it means.
- Rare in practice while being completely familiar as a word, so it rarely needs repeating or spelling out.
To consider
- Word names get read as statements. Journey announces a theme in a way that Anna or Claire does not, and some people will comment on it — usually kindly, but often.
- There is a well-known American rock band called Journey, formed in the 1970s and still touring. Adults will hear the band; children mostly will not.
- The name's whole history as a given name is recent, so there are no elders carrying it and no inherited short forms. Any nickname will be one your family invents.
