Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Journey
a day's travel; a trip
From Old French journée, 'a day's work or a day's traveling', which comes from Latin diurnus, 'of a day'. The 'day' sense is still visible in the French word for a day, journée.
diurnus (Latin) → journée (Old French) → journei (Middle English) → Journey
How it traveled
The word arrived in England after the Norman Conquest and settled into Middle English as journei, meaning the distance one could cover in a single day — in medieval usage, roughly twenty miles. Over time the day dropped out of the meaning and only the traveling remained, until a journey could be any length at all.
Julianna
of the Julii — belonging to Julius
Julianna is a feminine form of the Latin Iulianus, itself formed from the old Roman family name Iulius. What Iulius meant before it was a family name is not settled: it has been linked both to the god Jupiter and to a Greek word for soft, downy hair. The step from Julius to Julianna, though, is clear.
Iulius → Iulianus → Iuliana → Juliana → Julianna
How it traveled
The Julii were one of Rome's old patrician families, and from their name Latin built the adjective Iulianus, "of the Julii", with the feminine Iuliana. Early Christian martyrs carried Iuliana, which kept the name alive through the Middle Ages in Latin and then in nearly every European vernacular: Giuliana in Italy, Juliana in Spain and the Netherlands, Julienne in France, Julianna in Hungary and Poland.

Out loud, and in short
Journey
JUR-nee
Two syllables, stress on the first, exactly like the everyday word. Rhymes with attorney.
- Journ — The obvious clipped form, used informally at home; no long tradition behind it, since the name itself is young.
- Jo — Informal, and a well-established given name in its own right for both women and men.
- JoJo — A playful doubling used mostly in early childhood.
Julianna
joo-lee-AH-nuh
Also commonly said joo-lee-AN-uh, with the third syllable rhyming with "can". Both are accepted in the US, so expect to state your preference now and then.
- Julie — The most common short form in English, and long established as a standalone given name in its own right.
- Jules — Informal, used within families and among friends; also used for boys named Julian or Julius.
- Anna — Drawn from the second half of the name; stands alone as a full given name across most of Europe.
- Annie — Informal, from the same second half; independently popular as a given name.
- Also Juli, Juju.

The trade-offs, name by name
Journey
Strengths
- A spelling almost no one gets wrong — it is an ordinary English word that most people have written down before.
- The meaning needs no footnote; anyone who hears it already knows what it means.
- Rare in practice while being completely familiar as a word, so it rarely needs repeating or spelling out.
To consider
- Word names get read as statements. Journey announces a theme in a way that Anna or Claire does not, and some people will comment on it — usually kindly, but often.
- There is a well-known American rock band called Journey, formed in the 1970s and still touring. Adults will hear the band; children mostly will not.
- The name's whole history as a given name is recent, so there are no elders carrying it and no inherited short forms. Any nickname will be one your family invents.
Julianna
Strengths
- Recognized in Spanish, Italian, Polish, Hungarian and Dutch in closely related forms, so it travels without needing translation.
- An unbroken written record stretching back to Roman Latin, with no gap where the name fell out of use.
- Several long-established short forms — Julie, Anna, Annie — each of which is a complete name on its own.
To consider
- Juliana and Julianna are both in steady use, and Julianne exists too. You will be spelling it aloud fairly often, and forms will sometimes come back with one n.
- The pronunciation genuinely splits between -AH-nuh and -AN-uh, so people will guess wrong roughly half the time until corrected.
- It sits in a crowded family — Julia, Julie, Juliet, Juliana — and may get casually swapped with a cousin or classmate carrying one of those.
