Where it comes from

The story of Zurisadai

In Numbers, Zurishaddai is named only as the father of Shelumiel, the leader of the tribe of Simeon during the wilderness years. The Reina-Valera, the standard Bible of Spanish-speaking Protestant churches, writes the name Zurisadai: Spanish spelling has no sh, so the h that English uses for the Hebrew sound drops away, along with the doubled d. In the Bible it is a man's name; in American records it is given to girls. Its first two syllables, Zuri, happen to be the Swahili word for good or beautiful.

Meaning

my rock is the Almighty

Hebrew Tsurishaddai joins tsur, rock, with Shaddai, an ancient title of God usually translated the Almighty. What Shaddai itself first meant is debated, but the reading of the name as a whole is not.

How the name formed

Fashion outlook

Zurisadai sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A biblical name with a clear and settled meaning.
  • Zuri gives an easy, familiar short form.
  • Distinctive without being invented.
What to consider
  • Four syllables with an unusual ending; most people will need it spelled and said.
  • Readers who know the Bible will know it as a man's name, and the family may be asked about that; the meaning itself belongs to neither sex.
