Zeta
Feminine
The Greek letters are Phoenician words. Alpha is aleph, an ox; beta is bet, a house; zeta is zayin, a weapon. Greek took the alphabet from Phoenician and kept the names of the letters, which meant nothing at all in Greek and everything in the language it came from.

The story of Zeta
The Phoenician alphabet was a set of about twenty-two consonant signs, each named for an object whose name began with the sound, which is a mnemonic device rather than a writing system's grammar. Greek borrowed it around the ninth century before the common era, added vowels, and kept the names without translating them, so a Greek child learning the alphabet was reciting Phoenician nouns without knowing it. Zeta as a personal name is a nineteenth-century classical-revival choice, and its American best year is 1897. It is also a Welsh family name in one well-known case, and a Montenegrin river and region.
Meaning
the sixth letter of the Greek alphabet
Greek zeta, the sixth letter, from Phoenician zayin, generally understood as a weapon or a sword, the object the letter's shape originally depicted. The Greek letter names are borrowed sounds with no meaning in Greek; the same applies to alpha from aleph, an ox, and beta from bet, a house. The English word alphabet is the first two of them.

About 1 girl in 76,537 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 100,454 for Zeta itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off
- Four letters and no spelling difficulty of any kind.
- A real letter of a real alphabet with a documented Phoenician ancestor.
- The Z opening makes it immediately distinctive.
- Two pronunciations circulate, one British and one American.
- Zita is a separate name, a medieval Italian saint's, and gets confused with it.
- It reads as a nineteenth-century classical revival name.
