The story of Zealand
Abel Tasman sighted the islands in 1642 and Dutch cartographers named them Nova Zeelandia after the province of Zeeland; Cook anglicized it. The name entered American given-name use in the 2010s among the place-names — Zealand, Denver, Boston, Memphis — and appears in the registers in current use.

sea land
From the Danish Sjælland, generally read as 'sea land' — though the first element may be from a word for a seal, or from a personal name. The Dutch province Zeeland is a separate place with the same construction. Dutch mapmakers named Nieuw Zeeland after their own province, not the Danish island.

The Arik test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Zealand's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Arik climbed just as high around 1993, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Arik's path sketches the road Zealand is walking now.
Zealand is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

Where Zealand is headed
Zealand looks set to keep climbing gently, with roughly 52% more babies a year by 2030 if the current curve holds. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- The sea-land meaning is concrete and the places behind it are real.
- The Dutch naming of New Zealand is a genuinely good piece of history.
- Zee is available as a short form with modern currency.
- The first element is genuinely disputed between sea, seal and a personal name.
- The country association is total.
- It is very new as a given name.
