Our story of Zarria
In the sixteenth century the Hausa kingdom of Zazzau was ruled for a time by Queen Amina, remembered as a warrior who extended its power and built walled towns; by tradition the city of Zaria takes its name from her younger sister, Zaria. Zarria, with its doubled r, was not taken from the city; it came from the bright Z- names of its own day. But it shares its sound with a princess and a walled city.
